About
-
VIMS here stands for Visually Induced Motion Sensations. Previous VIMS symposia also referred to Visually Induced Motion Sickness and Visual IMage Safety. The, about bi-annual, VIMS symposia were initiated by the Pokémon Incident, in which over 600 people were taken to hospital in Japan after viewing an episode of the Pokémon animated film, broadcast in 1997, due to epileptic seizures. This event resulted in the 3rd ISO International Workshop Agreement in 2005, in which guidelines were presented to not only prevent epileptic seizures, but also visually induced motion sickness and visual fatigue. Virtual reality and VR goggles in particular have caused a shift of interest and are currently a major driver for the symposium.
-
The VIMS symposia bring together researchers from all around the world. They focus on all types of visually induced motion sensations, with or without physical self-motion, including:
real and virtual images
self- and object-motion perception and illusions
immersion and presence
all types of motion sickness in which vision plays a role (VR sickness cybersickness, simulator sickness)
health(care), safety, performance and comfort
individual factors
visual-vestibular interactions
theory and modelling
science, technology, and application
